In the 1944 Durham City Directory, Rawls C Bowen (Shorty), my grandfather, is listed as manager of the Holman St. Grocery. That was just a few blocks from his home at 701 N. Alston Ave. Previous to this he operated a grocery on East Main St. at two locations at different times.
